IN SUPPORT OF THE MOURNING MOTHERS OF IRAN

On Saturday, 20 June 2009, an innocent bystander,

Neda Agha Soltan, was shot dead in one of Tehran´s streets in broad daylight and in front of the bewildered eyes of the passers-by. She was one of the thousands marchers of all ages, after the rigged presidential elections, which triggered an outburst of demonstrations by the Iranians asking: “Where is my vote?” and the string of atrocities carried out by the Iranian regime.

In the processes which followed a number of people were either shot dead on the streets or died under torture in detention centres or in suspicious circumstances. Mothers who lost their children in this way decided to gather peacefully in central Tehran’s Laleh Park every Saturday to seek justice and show solidarity with other mothers who had also lost their children in the course of events. To this date, despite heavy suppression by the government forces, more mothers as well as other people are showing their determination of unity and solidarity with the bereaved mothers by attending these gatherings in Tehran and other Iranian cities as well as globally, dressed in black and silently promising that “we will never let these crimes pass by unnoticed or the perpetrators unpunished.”

Mourning mothers of Iran and their supporters worldwide also demand the ongoing street violence brought to an end, political prisoners released, rapid unlawful executions stopped and those responsible for the killings over the past 31 years to be brought to justice.

Supporters of Mourning would urge you to join them this Saturday and every first Saturday of the month at Trafalgar Square, London, from 2-3 pm to commemorate the occasion and to tell the world that those who were murdered in line of freedom and democracy for Iran and their bereaved mothers will never be forgotten.

Female Kurdish political prisoner Zeinab Jalilian has been sentenced to death. Please email United Nations Human Rights on: registry@ohchr.org and request that they act on saving her life.
